The Role: Senior Real World Evidence Data Scientist

We are seeking a talented and passionate Senior Data Scientist to join our Clinical Research team within the Real World Evidence (RWE) division. In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for generating robust, credible evidence through advanced research methodologies and innovative approaches in the clinical trials space. You will serve as a strategic partner in driving data-informed decision-making both within and outside the organization, utilizing your expertise in data science and technology to make a meaningful impact on healthcare outcomes.

This position reports to our Chief of Clinical Data Science and offers the unique opportunity to work at the intersection of data science, clinical research, and healthcare innovation. You will conduct sophisticated data analyses to address critical business questions and contribute to studies that have the potential to influence treatment protocols, healthcare policies, and patient care standards worldwide.

Key Responsibilities


  • Data Mining and Analysis: Extract and refine raw datasets to deliver normalized, analysis-ready patient cohorts from internal data resources or licensed platforms. Analyze and interpret complex results while contributing to the development of comprehensive analysis strategies.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with members of the Clinical Trials team to deliver actionable insights from real-world, clinical, and diverse data sources. Support biopharmaceutical RWE and clinical trial requests including analyses of unmet medical needs, safety and efficacy in specific disease states, treatment patterns, healthcare economic burden, and cost-effectiveness modeling.

  • Data Management and Integration: Clean, transform, and store data into an integrated data lake architecture for future analysis and broader team utilization, ensuring data integrity and accessibility.

  • Statistical Analysis and Insights: Perform data mining and statistical analysis on RWE/real-world data (RWD) to uncover new insights regarding patient populations and treatment outcomes, employing advanced statistical methodologies.

  • Capability Development: Support the development of real-world data, analytics, and platform capabilities by applying advanced analytical tools to address scientific inquiries from biopharmaceutical organizations.

  • Research Study Execution: Collaborate on the design and execution of outcomes research studies, ensuring methodological rigor and scientific validity.

  • Quality Assurance: Deliver high-quality, thorough, and readily interpretable outputs from RWE reviews and investigations, maintaining the highest standards of scientific excellence.

  • Reporting and Visualization: Build dashboards, analyses, and comprehensive reports for both internal and external stakeholders, translating complex findings into accessible insights.

  • Vendor Evaluation: Conduct due diligence on new real-world data providers and vendors, driving RWD quality assessments to inform strategic project decisions.

Essential Qualifications


  • Statistical Expertise: Proven experience designing and executing robust and reproducible statistical analyses in the context of epidemiology and observational research with healthcare data.

  • Statistical Methods Proficiency: Strong knowledge of common statistical testing techniques including generalized linear models, clustering and segmentation, decision trees, unsupervised learning, time series analysis, and survival analysis.

  • Big Data Experience: Demonstrated experience processing large-scale data from diverse data sources with efficiency and accuracy.

  • Healthcare Data Compliance: Experience handling protected patient health information (PHI) with strict adherence to privacy regulations and security protocols.

  • Business Intelligence Tools: Proficiency in at least one of the following: Tableau, Power BI, Alteryx, Spotfire, or other business intelligence and visualization platforms.

  • Educational Background: Bachelor's degree in statistics, biostatistics, data science, mathematics, or a related quantitative field.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Advanced Degree: PhD or Master's degree in statistics/biostatistics, computer science, mathematics, systems engineering, biomedical engineering, or a related field.

  • Healthcare Data Expertise: Demonstrated proficiency in EMR/Health IT systems, disease registries, and insurance claims databases.

  • Clinical Data Standards: Familiarity with clinical data standards, clinical terminologies, and controlled vocabularies used in healthcare data and ontologies (ICD-9/10/ReadCode).

  • Regulatory Knowledge: Experience with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and regulatory compliance guidelines for real-world evidence studies or clinical trials (e.g., ISO, MDD/MDR, CFR).

  • Innovative Data Collection: Experience working with alternative data sources and novel methods for clinical data collection, particularly those enabled by technology platforms and solutions.

  • Advanced Statistical Skills: Experience with experimental design, Bayesian modeling, sequential data, and computational statistics.

  • Continuous Learning: Strong understanding of statistics and machine learning methods, with the ability to independently develop both technical and non-technical skills.
