About the Role
As a Distributed Systems Engineer (L4) on our Data Platform team, you will play a critical role in architecting and building the foundational systems that power arenaflex's data-driven decision making. This is an exceptional opportunity to work on complex, large-scale distributed systems that process petabytes of data and serve millions of requests per second. You will collaborate with talented engineers across the organization to build reliable, scalable, and high-performance systems that are central to arenaflex's success.

Focus Areas
Database Access Platform
The Database Access Platform team builds and operates a flexible query gateway that provides data abstractions to operate at sub-millisecond latencies while enabling arenaflex microservices to more efficiently store, consume, and manage their data. This team holds significant responsibility to enable arenaflex microservices to meet their ever-growing and evolving data needs.
This team is passionate about distributed data systems technology. We are active in the open-source community and believe in operating what we build. We are a small team responsible for business-critical systems and are committed to a culture of feedback and engineering excellence.
Data Platform Infrastructure
The Data Platform Infrastructure team serves as a platform for our internal data platforms. Our shared infrastructure and tooling enable arenaflex to quickly simplify the delivery of cutting-edge data and analytics systems to the rest of the organization without building custom platforms for each new system. To achieve this, we create high-impact infrastructure, control, and orchestration systems that are fine-tuned for the needs of running our data systems at scale. Many of our tools and systems are written in Python, making this an excellent team to consider if you enjoy working in diverse programming languages.
Data Ingestion and Processing
This team offers a dedicated self-service streaming product to enable varied client personas across arenaflex to meet their low-latency Data Ingestion and Processing requirements. They enable reflection across complex streaming structures like Kafka and Flink, offer a pattern-driven processing experience, and invest in operational automation, reliability, and tools for predictable data quality.
Big Data Compute
Responsible for providing the cloud-native platform for distributed data processing at arenaflex, this team is crucial to batch data processing in the Data Platform. It offers support for Spark, to ETL data into the petabyte-scale data warehouse and access that data using Spark and Presto/TrinoDB. It also provides sub-second latency for a specific class of queries using Druid. We are looking for outstanding talent with experience in Spark, Presto/Trino, Druid, Iceberg, and distributed database systems in general.
Positions on this team involve tackling fascinating and challenging problems of working with data at scale, building features and performance improvements, and working closely with open-source communities to shape projects and make contributions.
Big Data Orchestration
Offers the platform for designing, orchestrating, and executing big data jobs and workflows in a self-serve manner. These platforms include essential services that have all ETL and ML jobs running on Big Data Systems at arenaflex. These fully distributed systems are constantly evolving for arenaflex scale with cutting-edge technology. We are moving towards event-driven and intelligent orchestration that would require minimal client input/intervention.
What You Will Do
- Design, develop, and maintain large-scale distributed systems that power arenaflex's data infrastructure
- Address real business needs at massive scale by applying your programming and analytical problem-solving skills
- Architect and build robust, scalable, and highly available distributed infrastructure
- Drive cross-functional initiatives and collaborate with engineers, product managers, and technical program managers across teams
- Contribute to our experiences by sharing knowledge with open-source communities and contributing to arenaflex open-source projects
- Work with cutting-edge technologies including Kafka, Flink, Spark, Druid, and cloud-native platforms
- Participate in on-call rotation to ensure system reliability and uptime
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to a culture of technical excellence
What You Bring
Basic Qualifications
- 2+ years of experience building large-scale distributed systems, services, or applications
- Strong proficiency in the design and development of RESTful web services
- Experience building and operating scalable, fault-tolerant, distributed systems
- Proficiency in Java or other object-oriented programming languages
- Comfort with multi-threading and concurrent programming challenges
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with big data technologies such as Spark, Flink, Kafka, or similar frameworks
- Knowledge of cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and cloud-native architectures
- Familiarity with containerization technologies like Docker and Kubernetes
- Experience with database systems including relational, NoSQL, and distributed databases
- Strong communication skills and the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
- Experience contributing to open-source projects or maintaining open-source libraries
- Advanced degree in Computer Science or a related technical field
Understanding of data engineering best practices, including data modeling, ETL pipelines, and data quality
