As a Financial Counselor at arenaflex, you will be at the forefront of patient financial care, serving as a vital link between patients, medical staff, and insurance providers. Your work will directly impact our ability to continue serving our communities by helping to ensure the financial sustainability of our programs and services.

Position Overview: What You'll Do

We are seeking a detail-oriented and compassionate Financial Counselor to ensure that coverage is financially cleared for all emergency inpatient and observation services. In this role, you will be responsible for reviewing insurance eligibility and benefits, creating patient estimates, and facilitating upfront cash collections when appropriate. You will interact professionally with all patient-related hospital departments, patients, families, visitors, nursing personnel, and medical staff.

Your daily responsibilities will include conducting thorough reviews of inpatient and observation patient accounts, determining authorizations and benefits, creating accurate financial estimates, and collecting point-of-service payments when needed. Additionally, you will identify appropriate payment sources, which may include patient payments and/or referrals for enrollment in government programs such as Medicaid and Charity Care. If applicable, you will provide timely and appropriate referrals for various state medical assistance programs.

Key Responsibilities:


  • Insurance Eligibility and Benefits Review: Conduct comprehensive reviews of insurance eligibility and benefits for all emergency inpatient and observation services to ensure proper financial clearance.

  • Financial Estimation and Collection: Create accurate cost estimates for patients and facilitate upfront cash collection as needed, ensuring transparency in healthcare billing.

  • Account Resolution: Take actions that support maximization of collection of balances due or account resolution from all sources, meeting quality and productivity expectations.

  • Billing Error Correction: Facilitate account resolution by accurately identifying, following up on, or correcting billing errors, lower than expected reimbursement, or denials for correction for submission or resubmission to patients and/or insurance carriers.

  • Efficient Account Management: Accurately perform actions on accounts that will result in the least amount of time and effort to bring an account to resolution based on job-specific priority matrices.

  • Issue Identification and Resolution: Timely identify, research, and resolve any issues that may cause delays in payment or account resolution.

  • Process Improvement: Identify and recommend opportunities to improve collections and follow-up activities, contributing to departmental excellence.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work collaboratively across teams, with peers, and revenue cycle departments to ensure seamless patient financial experiences.

  • Government Program Enrollment: Identify patients who may qualify for Medicaid, Charity Care, or other government assistance programs and provide appropriate referrals for enrollment.

  • Patient and Family Communication: Interact professionally and compassionately with patients, families, and visitors, answering questions and providing clear explanations of financial responsibilities and options.

Qualifications: What We're Looking For

Education and Certification Requirements:


  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required within one (1) year of hire.

  • Candidates who do not possess a High School Diploma or GED equivalent will be provided the opportunity to enroll in a GED/HSEA program at time of hire as a condition of employment. A hired candidate will be provided one (1) year from date of hire to successfully complete a GED program and obtain their HSEA.

Required Experience and Knowledge:


  • Four (4) years of similar hospital billing or accounting experience required.

  • Minimum of three (3) years of insurance authorization/pre-certification experience required.

  • In-depth knowledge of Charity Care, Uncompensated Care, and Medicaid guidelines and regulations.

  • Knowledge of medical terminology and insurance verification preferred.

  • Knowledge of insurance, insurance verification, and TOS (Type of Service) collections.

  • Prior experience in hospital admissions preferred.

  • Computer experience required, with proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and healthcare billing systems.

Preferred Qualifications:


  • Preferred experience includes insurance verification, cash collections, and obtaining Notices of Admission (NOA), with knowledge of various insurance plans.

  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred—strong communication skills in both languages is highly valued in our diverse patient population.

  • Hourly Pay Range: $20.14 - $25.47 per hour

Work Environment and Culture

As a remote Financial Counselor, you will enjoy the flexibility of working from home while remaining connected to our team and mission. This position offers the convenience of a remote work arrangement while requiring you to be an integral part of our Patient Financial Services team.

Schedule Details:


  • Position Type: Full-time

  • Work Schedule: Remote, Monday through Friday, 1:00 PM - 9:00 PM

  • Weekend Rotation: Rotating every other weekend (1:00 PM - 9:00 PM Saturday and Sunday) required

  • Holiday Rotation: Rotating holidays required

  • Travel: Occasional travel as needed to support our medical centers
