Position Overview: Data Scientist - Applied Product Group

Are you passionate about data-driven decision-making and ready to be at the forefront of AI product innovation? arenaflex is seeking an experienced Data Scientist to join our Applied Product team as an early member of our growing Data Science group. This is a unique opportunity to establish and shape the data-driven product development culture for our consumer products or developer platform.

In this pivotal role, you will serve as a trusted partner to our product development teams, helping to define our north-star metrics, design and analyze our initial A/B tests, and create source-of-truth dashboards that the entire organization will rely on to answer critical product questions. You'll be a central figure in building our first-party offerings, working directly with cross-functional teams to transform data into actionable insights that drive product innovation.

This position is based at our San Francisco headquarters, with relocation assistance available for new employees joining our team.

What You'll Do

As a Data Scientist at arenaflex, you will play a critical role in bridging the gap between data and product strategy. Your work will directly influence how we build and improve our AI-powered products. Here's what you can expect to do:

Strategic Partnership: Integrate with the product development team as a trusted partner, uncovering better ways to improve our products and drive sustainable growth across all our offerings.

Experimental Design & Analysis: Define and interpret A/B tests that help answer fundamental questions about the impact of model changes and user experience modifications to our products, ensuring rigorous statistical methodology.

Metrics Development: Establish a data-driven product development culture by leading the definition, tracking, and operationalization of feature-level, product-level, and organization-level metrics that measure success.

Self-Serve Analytics: Create and socialize dashboards, reports, and alternative approaches that enable teams across the company to answer product information questions independently in a self-serve manner.

Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with product managers, engineers, designers, and leadership to translate data insights into concrete product recommendations and roadmaps.

Data Infrastructure: Help build and maintain robust data pipelines and infrastructure that support scalable analytics and decision-making across the organization.

Knowledge Sharing: Mentor team members on analytical best practices and help elevate the data literacy across the entire organization.

What We're Looking For

We're seeking a candidate who thrives in ambiguous environments and is passionate about using data to drive meaningful product outcomes. The ideal candidate will bring a proven track record of translating complex data into clear, actionable insights.

Essential Qualifications:

Experience: 5+ years of experience in a quantitative role exploring highly ambiguous conditions, preferably as a founding data scientist or product analyst at a hyper-growth product company or research organization.
Technical Skills: Demonstrated experience designing, proposing, and running rigorous tests with clear insights and product recommendations using SQL and Python or similar programming languages.
Metrics Expertise: Proven track record of defining, implementing, and operationalizing new feature and product-level metrics from scratch.
Communication: Excellent interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with product managers, engineers, and executives at all levels of the organization.
Statistical Knowledge: Strong foundation in experimental methodology and statistical analysis, with key experiences beyond the paradigm of statistical significance testing.
Education: Bachelor's degree in a quantitative field such as Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Economics, or equivalent practical experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

AI/NLP Experience: Demonstrated related experience in natural language processing (NLP), large language models (LLMs), or generative AI technologies.
Technical Depth: Strong programming background with the ability to run simulations and model variants for predictive analysis.
Research Skills: Experience validating quantitative insights with qualitative methods such as surveys and user experience research (UXR).
Advanced Degree: Master's or Ph.D. in a quantitative field is a plus but not required.
Industry Knowledge: Familiarity with the AI/ML technology landscape and experience working with API-based products or developer tools.
