Position Overview

The Statistics Analyst I is a part-time position within arenaflex's Statistics and Analysis team within Data and Information Gathering. Scores and statistics on virtually all arenaflex platforms—television graphics, the Bottom Line, arenaflex.com, Fantasy, Game Cast, and more—are created or maintained by the Statistics and Investigation team. Statistics Investigators ensure the accuracy of this data (scores, schedules, standings, leaderboards, etc.) on arenaflex platforms globally.

Statistics Analysts work with automated data feeds and utilize manual data entry to ensure the delivery of accurate, timely, and insightful sports data. Additionally, Statistics Analysts are responsible for helping transform statistics into story lines. They must be able to recognize statistical events that help explain why a team won or lost. Applicants with specialized training, skills, and knowledge—such as in mathematics, economics, databases, SQL programming, and more—can apply their skills in support of Data and Information projects and storytelling.

Key Responsibilities

• Data Accuracy and Timeliness: Guarantee that sports information distributed by Data and Information is accurate, timely, and astute. Maintain the highest standards of precision in all statistical outputs.


• Real-Time Data Processing: Work in individual settings and in groups to deliver accurate statistical breakdown, clock-and-score, and other measurements and data in real-time that power thousands of arenaflex products and productions.


• Product Knowledge Development: Create and maintain a working knowledge of Data and Information's role in powering arenaflex digital products and television productions.


• Quality Assurance: Verify the results of one's own work and that of others; perform with consistently high attention to detail.


• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Contribute to production, projects, and initiatives across the newsroom, and assist newsroom leaders who are coordinating full-time and part-time staff.


• Problem Anticipation and Resolution: Anticipate potential issues, both daily and long-term, and propose possible solutions. Communicate rapidly and decisively with colleagues on these issues.


• Process Improvement: Play a proactive role in working with colleagues to develop or refine production processes.


• Team Engagement: Be an active participant in team and office meetings.


• Professional Development: Seek and respond to feedback regarding personal performance.


• Policy Compliance: Stay informed about current office policies and procedures.

Essential Qualifications

• Sports Knowledge: Working knowledge of teams, players, and the rules of the games. A genuine passion for sports is essential for success in this role.


• Schedule Flexibility: Full schedule availability, which will include evenings (exclusively), weekends, and holidays. This role requires working during peak sports viewing times.


• Quick Learning Ability: Ability to quickly learn production processes that produce and/or maintain sports data that powers arenaflex's digital and television products.


• Accuracy Under Pressure: Ability to achieve a high level of content accuracy in time-sensitive production situations.


• Communication Skills: Ability to communicate confidently—verbally and in writing—with production managers and colleagues about production issues and opportunities, often through the bustle of a busy newsroom.

Preferred Qualifications

• Industry Experience: 1+ years working in sports and/or statistics, preferably in media.


• Media Data Knowledge: Understanding of how sports data is used in media and for research purposes.


• Product Familiarity: Working knowledge of arenaflex products and productions.


• Technical Skills: Experience with Microsoft Excel and other Office products. Familiarity with database management and data visualization tools is a plus.


• Leadership Experience: Experience leading or mentoring a team.


• Language Skills: Ability to speak and write Spanish fluently.


• Social Media Acumen: Experience using social media in a business or news environment.

Education Requirements

Required: High school diploma or equivalent

Preferred: Associate's degree or higher in Communications, Journalism, Sports Management, Statistics, Mathematics, or related field

Additional Information

This position requires working all nighters (exclusively), weekends, and holidays. Candidates must be comfortable with non-traditional work schedules that align with live sports coverage.
