Position Overview
Are you a skilled media engineering professional looking to make your mark in the broadcast technology industry? arenaflex is seeking a talented Media Engineer II to join our Back Night Shift team. As a Media Engineer II, you will play a critical role in ensuring the seamless operation of our media production and distribution infrastructure. You will be responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and optimizing our broadcast systems while working alongside a team of dedicated professionals in a fast-paced, cutting-edge environment.
Key Responsibilities
As a Media Engineer II at arenaflex, you will be entrusted with diverse and challenging responsibilities that are essential to our broadcast operations. Your duties will include:
- System Maintenance & Support: Respond to and resolve issues that impact production, broadcast, and content distribution across multiple networks, including system outages, breakdowns, and related technical issues. Conduct diagnostic testing, repair, and replacement activities necessary to resolve common, specialized, and complex problems.
- Monitoring & Performance: Utilize system health and performance monitoring software and platforms to identify potential issues before they escalate. Investigate and participate in fixing system issues and failures, participate in system maintenance, install software patches, updates, and more to resolve and avoid service issues.
- Signal Analysis: Examine and investigate internet audio/video signals in traditional SDI and IP 2110 essence stream routing environments. Ensure signal integrity and quality across all distribution pathways.
- Cloud Platform Management: Investigate and explore cloud platforms as required, working with our cloud-based infrastructure to support various broadcasting initiatives.
- Vendor Management: Manage third-party service providers by enforcing the agreed-upon scope of services within various signed support agreements, including full-time, independent, partnership organizations, maintenance providers, contractors, and service providers.
- Team Leadership: Select, train, motivate, and evaluate technical staff; provide or direct staff training; work with employees to address deficiencies; implement disciplinary procedures when necessary.
- Equipment Procurement: Determine and secure hardware, supplies, and materials for media technology systems within budget guidelines; obtain and maintain equipment and supplies.
- Strategic Planning: Develop long-range plans for future media technology needs, including capital improvements, to enhance production and distribution capabilities.
- Policy Development: Aid the development and execution of policies and procedures regarding technology facilities with a focus on increasing the integration of all assets to meet business, marketing, and entertainment goals.
- Operational Support: Provide operational support of transitions of all types related to operating, maintaining, and programming sound and video production/distribution systems across the enterprise and other associated properties.
- System Upgrades: Perform upgrades to system hardware and software workflows under the supervision of a more experienced engineer or manager.
- Preventive Maintenance: Perform and schedule preventive maintenance on all broadcast systems and equipment, including distribution systems, switchers, consoles, playout servers, cameras, robotics, electromechanical equipment, automation systems, and radio facilities to ensure optimal transmission performance.
- Project Participation: Participate in complex engineering projects at the direction of more experienced engineers.
- Documentation: Review, maintain, and add to system/workflow documentation to ensure knowledge transfer and operational continuity.
- Training & Development: Participate in training and development objectives. Conduct peer training and development sessions to share knowledge and expertise with team members.
Essential Qualifications
To be considered for this position, candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Experience: Minimum of 3+ years of past and relevant experience in ensuring professional sustainment, uptime, and overall security of the technical environments of live media production and distribution environments.
- Education: Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer science, or comparable major, or equivalent work experience.
- Technical Expertise: Proven troubleshooting and supporting experience in at least one of the following areas:
- IP-based broadcast equipment including routers, switchers, audio boards, signal processors, encoder/decoders, video scalers, playback systems, and related infrastructure
- Studio technology including video walls, cameras, VR set technology, image processing systems, touch screens, lighting, and more
- Record-based workflows such as project Media Asset Management systems (Cloud-based Cloud Compute or Local Network based) including storage, compute, encode, and distribution
- Production control systems, such as Imagine Communications or Grass Valley automation systems, Avid, Adobe, Viz, Dalet, Riedel trunking, Lawo, Calrec, Evertz, Ross, and others
- Transmission systems like RF (Radio Frequency), Satellite Distribution, Fiber Distribution, and related technologies
- Cloud Knowledge: Proven history of troubleshooting and sustainment knowledge of AWS infrastructure and other cloud-based technologies including S3/Ice storage and cloud compute (EC2) services.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to climb ladders, work on elevated structures and building rooftops, operate aerial lift platforms, and possess a valid driver's license.
- Technical Drawing: Ability to create, read, and interpret AutoCAD and other technical drawing/documentation tools.
Preferred Qualifications
While not required, the following qualifications would be highly advantageous for candidates seeking to excel in this role:
- Knowledge and experience in on-premises and cloud-based storage and compute infrastructure platforms and current technological offerings
- Knowledge and experience with SMPTE standards for broadcast television and video production/streaming environments
- Knowledge and experience in compression techniques such as MPEG2/4, HEVC, JPEG 2000, and JPEG XS
- Knowledge and experience in Evertz software control systems, such as frame control through Vista Link or Magnum, EQX/EXE switches, and their monitoring software VLPRO, SDVN, MVP, and VUE
- Knowledge and experience in Nielsen (NACAT), VANC equipment, Direct Acoustics, and other related systems
- Knowledge and experience in hosted receiver decoders IRDs, hub devices, edge devices, timing of video and audio systems, audio and video media file formats
