We are seeking a Freelance Proofreader to support a high-volume portfolio of employee benefits and insurance communications during our client's busy open enrollment season. This role is ideal for someone who is detail-obsessed, comfortable working with multiple client style guides, and able to follow established processes within a corporate environment.
You'll work with a steady, long-term client in the insurance/benefits space, supporting their internal team by proofreading a wide range of member- and employee-facing materials.
Responsibilities:
• Proofread a high volume of materials, including (but not limited to):
• Short-form pieces (e.g., postcard copy, one-pagers, emails).
• Long-form pieces (e.g., benefits guides up to ~48 pages).
• Ensure accuracy in grammar, spelling, punctuation, and usage, including:
• Correct use of terminology and benefit/insurance jargon.
• Consistent application of client-specific language and preferences.
• Apply and adhere to multiple client style guides, including:
• Learning and respecting each client's style "quirks" and preferences.
• Incorporating feedback and corrections into future work.
• Follow established workflows and processes, such as:
• Using defined review steps and tools.
• Making changes only within the appropriate stage of the process.
• Avoiding unsolicited rewrites or creative changes when they are out of scope.
• Communicate clearly and proactively with the internal team:
• Flag issues, questions, and potential risks in a timely manner.
• Provide status updates, especially if timelines or availability change.
• Set expectations around your availability during the day.
• Collaborate with a corporate team environment:
• Work effectively within existing systems, tools, and approval processes.
• Participate in an assessment and interview process prior to engagement.
• Potentially remain "on call" post-season for ad hoc needs, if mutually agreed.
Qualifications:
• Strong professional proofreading experience, ideally with:
• Marketing, communications, or corporate documents.
• Multi-page and design-heavy pieces (e.g., guides, brochures).
• Proven ability to work with and enforce style guides, including:
• Applying multiple client-specific style rules concurrently.
• Comfort with revisiting and learning written guidelines
• Excellent attention to detail:
• Ability to catch recurring issues and ensure they do not repeat.
• Comfort working with dense text and technical / benefit-related language.
• Strong communication Skills:
• Proactive about availability (e.g., letting the team know about appointments or time away).
• Comfortable communicating via email/online tools with a distributed team.
• Comfort in a corporate environment:
• Experience working with established processes and sign-off structures.
• Willingness to follow "the way we do things" even when it differs from prior freelance habits.
• US-based, with the ability to work effectively across Eastern/Central-aligned hours.
Nice-to-Haves:
• Experience in insurance, employee benefits, or HR communications.
• Prior experience supporting open enrollment or similar seasonal benefit campaigns.
• Experience working as a contractor with large corporate clients.
• Familiarity with accessible, member-friendly communications tone.
